GCMD study identifies two sites to pilot ammonia bunkering in Singapore

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) on Monday (11 March) said its Ammonia Bunkering Safety Study identified two locations in Singapore to pilot ammonia bunkering.

During its webinar titled Key Insights from GCMD’s Ammonia Bunkering Safety Study, GCMD Director of Research & Projects, Vibin Chandrabose, presented key findings from its study on piloting ammonia bunkering in Singapore, completed last year.

“The study identified two promising land sites to pilot ammonia bunkering, in addition to bunkering at Raffles Reserved Anchorage,” it said in a social media post.

“These are the Advario and Vopak terminals, selected after a comprehensive evaluation of seven sites in Singapore.”

GCMD said these sites were suitable for piloting shore-ship bunkering operations as they met key criteria, such as safety, ease of access to, and extensive experience and capabilities for handling ammonia.

In the webinar, Chandrabose covered:

  • Singapore’s ammonia bunkering demand forecast
  • Feasible designs for modes of ammonia breakbulk and bunkering
  • Suitable sites for piloting ammonia bunkering
  • Potential hazards, risks, and mitigation strategies
  • Findings using Coarse Quantitative Risk Analysis (CQRA) to quantify the risks related to ammonia bunkering operations, and
  • Estimated total expenditure required for additional infrastructure build-out to operationalise ammonia bunkering at two land-based sites
