Shane BALANI

Director, Research & Projects

Shane is a mechanical engineer, with 8 years of experience in the marine industry developing competence in the areas of technical assessment, decarbonisation R&D and project management. Shane started in the industry by training with the UK Royal Navy, and has since specialised ashore as a marine surveyor in a leading Classification Society, working on novel newbuilding projects for what was at the time the world’s largest heavy lift offshore vessel and one of the first ever dual-fuel installations. Of his time spent working across multiple continents, Shane also worked as an accredited ship surveyor in the busy port of Singapore, ranging from port state compliance issues, emergency repairs, and deep retrofit projects.

As a co-author of numerous publications discussing the feasibility and uptake of zero-emission fuels for shipping since 2017, Shane has been involved in developing bespoke strategies and technological solutions for the entire shipping value chain, and most recently, in the development, facilitation and management of a Green Shipping Corridor anchored in Singapore. He worked closely with key international stakeholders to implement green shipping solutions as well as sculpt studies to develop fuel assurance capabilities and consider lifecycle implications of the industry as a whole.

Shane is a frequent presenter on projects at international conferences and has represented his former company on advisory panels and sustainable shipping initiatives. Shane graduated from the University of Bristol with a first class master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
