Capt. Basil REGO
Senior Associate, Research & Projects
Basil is a Senior Associate in the Research & Projects team at the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation, supporting GCMD’s ammonia as a marine fuel initiative.
Prior to joining GCMD, he was the Marine Superintendent at Hong Lam Marine, where he was responsible for all marine and HSE related jobs of ship management, like preparing vessels for external inspections and audits, and ensuring the efficient and satisfactory performance of ships meet charterers’ requirements.
Over half of Basil’s total work experience has been with oil majors, namely ExxonMobil and Shell, with more than 30 years of experience in the marine industry, mainly in the oil & gas sector, both at sea and ashore. He has sailed for more than a decade, all of which were on oil tankers, and worked ashore for over twenty years in various countries, including Australia, Brunei, and Singapore, in various diverse capacities, as a Marine Surveyor, Pilot and Loading Master, Marine Operations Supervisor, Bunker Operator, and Marine & Safety Superintendent.
Basil holds a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, U.K., and alsograduated from the University of Bombay (Mumbai) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
Basil is passionately fond of sports and music, and remains physically active by playing various sports, mainly racket and ball games. He currently plays field hockey in the Singapore Hockey Federation’s league. He also loves to sing and play the guitar.
